Family Loses Acura RDX in Nanny Accident: What Should They Buy Next?

Family Loses Acura RDX in Nanny Accident: What Should They Buy Next?

Barry and his family recently moved from Los Angeles to St. Louis, bringing with them a stable of vehicles that included a used Acura RDX. That car, which they planned to hand down to their teenage daughter when she gets her license in June, was totaled by their nanny. No one was hurt, but the loss stings.

Now they need a replacement. The budget tops out at $25,000. They want something with all-wheel drive, safe for a new driver, and roughly the same size as the RDX. No third row. It should be nice enough to enjoy but not so nice that they’ll fret over dog hair, snow, or the general wear and tear of daily use.

Barry loves wagons; his wife prefers a small SUV. He also hopes the car won’t be boring to drive.

Tom McParland points to the Mazda CX-5. He notes that Mazda’s lineup often offers a quality import without the premium price tag of Honda or Toyota. A relatively recent CX-5 with reasonable miles fits the budget, brings the safety tech a new driver needs, and feels a bit more upscale than its price suggests.

A turbo engine is available for those wanting extra punch, though fuel economy takes a hit.

Collin Woodard takes a more direct approach. He observes that this is really about finding a new beater for the family, not a car tailored to the daughter’s tastes. He suggests a 2023 Nissan Rogue SV with low miles. It’s affordable, new enough for modern safety features, and nothing so precious that a messy dog or a clumsy teen will cause heartache.

Amber DaSilva offers a third path: a Subaru Outback. It has room for everyone and everything, and lightly used examples are plentiful in the low-$20,000 range. For a new driver, she also recommends the smaller Crosstrek, which is easier to maneuver and comes with a certified pre-owned warranty.

Either way, she says, Subaru’s all-wheel drive is a natural fit for St. Louis winters.

For those facing a similar decision, the key is balancing practicality with peace of mind. A car that handles snow, survives a teenager, and still leaves some budget for maintenance is a win.
