Driver Hospitalized After Car Plunges Into Open Lift Shaft in Mumbai

A white hatchback was captured on CCTV slowly driving across a tiled parking area in Mumbai, India, before its front wheels dropped into an open elevator shaft and the entire vehicle disappeared below. The footage, circulating via NewsX and The Sun, shows brake lights fully on as the car moves steadily forward, with the back wheels tipping upward before the vehicle falls out of view.

The incident occurred on August 4, 2026, according to Asianet Newsable. The driver missed a turn while attempting to park, and the vehicle plunged roughly 25 feet into a shaft where a parking lift was under construction. A wooden barrier meant to block the opening was broken through by the car.

Witnesses reported hearing the impact, and emergency crews pulled the driver out and transported him to a local hospital. He is currently undergoing treatment, though the extent of his injuries has not yet been confirmed.

Mumbai has a history of car elevator shaft accidents. An earlier tragedy at Iqbal Heights, a 22-floor building in the Agripada area, killed a 14-year-old boy and a family driver when their car plunged two floors down a shaft, as reported by Deccan Herald. In May 2025, a parking lift at a 21-story building in Borivali West collapsed into a seven-meter pit, trapping two men.

com from documented elevator incidents between 2022 and 2026 shows that unguarded shafts and fall-related accidents are among the deadliest recurring hazards, responsible for five of twenty incidents on record and linked to all three child deaths in the dataset. Falls into unguarded or inadequately guarded shafts, along with entrapment between lift cars and doors, make up the majority of serious outcomes.
