Don’t Assume That Big Brand Gas Station Is Selling You Their Own Fuel

If you drive a tuned car or just care about what goes into your tank, you’ve probably got a go-to gas station. For many enthusiasts, that’s Shell. Their gasoline consistently ranks among the best in independent tests, and they’ve built a reputation for quality that’s hard to beat.

But here’s the thing: pulling up to a Shell station doesn’t always mean you’re getting Shell fuel.

” It’s real. We checked with Shell to confirm. Turns out, while Shell has tight control over its gasoline supply, diesel is a different story. The company told us that at some locations, diesel is sourced from third-party suppliers, not from Shell. They put up those signs to let customers know, though the sticker’s placement near the gasoline pump handle and ethanol disclosure can be confusing.

This is a good reminder that fuel branding isn’t always what it seems. Most gas stations, even the big names, buy their fuel from a handful of large refiners. The difference often comes down to the additive package mixed in at the pump. So if you’re driving a diesel and you’re paying a premium for Shell’s reputation, take a second to look for that sticker.

You might be getting generic fuel at a premium price.
