Diesel vs. Gas: Why Some Engines Last Longer (And What It Means for Your Car)

Diesel vs. Gas: Why Some Engines Last Longer (And What It Means for Your Car)

You’ve probably heard that diesel engines can outlast gas engines. For owners of European and Japanese cars—whether it’s a Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, or Honda—that’s worth understanding, even if you don’t drive a diesel pickup. Here’s the simple version.

Diesel fuel is naturally oilier than gasoline. That extra lubricity means less friction inside the engine, which reduces wear over time. Diesel also packs about 13% more energy per gallon, so the engine doesn’t have to work as hard. Because diesels ignite fuel by compression rather than spark plugs, they’re built with stronger internal parts—heavier crankshafts, beefier blocks, and often gear-driven camshafts.

Those parts are designed to handle higher pressure, and they simply wear down slower than the lighter components in a gas engine.

Another key: diesels run at lower RPMs. Lower revs mean less friction and heat, which translates to longer life for bearings, rings, and cylinder walls. That’s why you’ll often see a diesel truck or SUV with 300,000 miles still running strong.

Now, does that mean you should rush out and buy a diesel? Not necessarily. Diesel engines cost more upfront, and maintenance can be pricier—especially with modern emissions systems. For most daily drivers, a well-maintained gas engine from Toyota, Honda, or BMW will still give you many years of reliable service.

But if you’re considering a diesel, know that the trade-off can pay off over the long haul.
