Dearborn Police Go Undercover with Electric Mustangs to Catch Reckless Drivers

If you’ve ever been tailgated, brake-checked, or forced off the road by an aggressive driver, you know the frustration of looking around for a police car that never seems to be there. In Dearborn, Michigan, officers are changing that equation—quietly. The city’s new Aggressive Driving Unit uses stealth Ford Mustang Mach-Es, electric vehicles with minimal markings that let cops observe traffic without tipping off offenders.
Police Chief Issa Shahin says traffic safety is a top concern for residents, and the department created the unit to enforce the law more effectively. “I have heard residents’ concerns regarding dangerous driving behaviors throughout Dearborn,” Shahin said. The electric powertrains and subdued design allow officers to blend in, catching drivers who only behave when they spot a traditional cruiser.
The unit recently posted video of a Ford F-250 driver weaving through traffic on Ford Road, cutting off other vehicles and failing to signal. Within minutes, the driver was pulled over. First-time reckless driving convictions in Michigan carry up to six points on a license, a $500 fine, and as many as 93 days in jail.
The department plans to expand the unit’s presence in high-traffic areas over the coming months, aiming to reduce collisions and change driver behavior. For now, the message is clear: aggressive driving doesn’t pay—especially when you can’t see the cops coming.
