Could a Nissan Sentra Bring Back the Mitsubishi Lancer?

Mitsubishi has been leaning heavily on its alliance partners for new models, from the Renault-based Eclipse Cross in Europe to the Nissan Leaf-derived Eclipse Sportback. That strategy raises a natural question: could the same parts-sharing logic revive the Lancer sedan for North America?
Nothing is official, and Mitsubishi hasn't announced any new sedans. But if the Lancer ever got the green light, the company almost certainly wouldn't fund the enormous R&D cost of engineering one from scratch. The quickest, cheapest path runs straight through the alliance parts bin—specifically, a rebadged Nissan Sentra.
The Sentra received a substantial facelift for 2026, with sharper styling and more cabin tech. 5-inch wheelbase, putting it within range of the old Lancer. Our rendering shows the fictional car with minimal changes: a redesigned grille with the Triple Diamond emblem, black inserts for a sporty note, and matching alloy wheels.
The rest of the sheet metal carries over untouched to keep costs low.
0-liter four-cylinder makes 149 horsepower, routed through a CVT to the front wheels. , undercutting the $24,995 Outlander Sport. It would also be the only sedan in the lineup, giving dealers the entry-level option they've been requesting.
The original Lancer arrived in 2001 as a replacement for the Mirage. Base trims handled the affordable-commuter role, while the rally-bred Evolution models built Mitsubishi's performance reputation. As buyers shifted to crossovers, Mitsubishi retired the Evo in 2015 and dropped the Lancer in 2017.
There's an obvious objection: reviving the Lancer as a rebadged Sentra would attach one of Mitsubishi's most storied nameplates to a car that shares nothing with what made it worth remembering. The name carries weight because of the Evolution, not the everyday front-drive models.
A CVT-equipped commuter sedan would trade on that history without delivering any of the performance, and the enthusiasts who care about the name would notice immediately.
For now, it remains speculation. But the logic is hard to ignore: shared platforms keep costs down, and a cheap sedan could fill a gap in Mitsubishi's lineup.
