China’s Luxeed RX SUV Enters the Fray, But Who Really Designed It?

China’s Luxeed RX SUV Enters the Fray, But Who Really Designed It?

The Chinese electric vehicle market just got another contender. The Luxeed RX, a new all-electric SUV from the Chery-owned brand, has officially surfaced, and it’s already drawing comparisons to the Ferrari Purosangue. That’s not a coincidence, according to Luxeed’s executive director Zhao Changjiang, who claims the vehicle was styled by a former Ferrari chief designer recently added to the team.

But Ferrari’s PR director in China isn’t buying it. On social media, the director publicly asked for the designer’s name, stating that the Italian automaker hasn’t actually lost its chief designer. No source has confirmed the designer’s identity, leaving the claim unverified. What’s clear is that the RX’s silhouette—with its sloping roofline, bulging rear quarter panels, and low front end—bears a strong resemblance to both the Purosangue and Xiaomi’s upcoming YU7.

Luxeed calls the RX a “Fashion Utility Vehicle,” or FUV. 1-inch wheelbase. The front features a black grille and a splitter, while the rear gets a full-width light bar. Photos from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology show options like yellow, red, and silver brake calipers, plus several wheel designs—including one with bright purple spokes.

Two powertrain versions are planned. The base model uses a rear-mounted electric motor producing 372 hp, paired with an NMC battery pack from CATL. A dual-motor version bumps power to a combined 586 hp and a top speed of 156 mph, using an NMC battery from CALB. Battery capacities have not yet been disclosed.

The RX enters a crowded segment, aiming to steal some attention from the Xiaomi YU7. Whether its design pedigree holds up to scrutiny remains an open question.
