Car Manufacturers Redefine Model Badges

Car companies are reusing classic names across models that share little with the originals. BMW's M badge, once indicating a hand-built engine from Motorsport, now appears on six different levels: M Sport, M Performance, M, M Competition, M CS, and M CSL. Not all M-badged BMWs are true performance machines.
Porsche's 'Turbo' name is used on electric models like the Taycan and Macan EV, which lack a turbocharger or gas engine. The 'Turbo' badge now signifies a trim level rather than forced induction. Volkswagen's GTI badge, originally meaning 'Grand Touring Injection,' is used on the electric ID.
Polo GTI, which has no injection system. According to the manufacturers, these changes aim to signify power and performance rather than specific engine technologies. Owners of vehicles with these badges are advised to check recall and service notices tied to their model, as safety and maintenance requirements remain unchanged.
