California Proposal May Impact Tire Efficiency and Safety

California Proposal May Impact Tire Efficiency and Safety

A proposal from the California Energy Commission would require aftermarket tires to meet the same efficiency standards as factory-installed tires. This plan aims to improve fuel economy, but it may compromise tire grip, tread life, and safety. Factory tires often prioritize low rolling resistance to meet fuel-economy targets, which can result in reduced traction and durability.

The proposed rule could limit choices for tires that prioritize wet-road safety, longer tread life, or better handling, particularly for performance cars like BMW M, Audi S, and Porsche models. Everyday drivers may experience reduced tire lifespan, from 60,000-plus miles to around 27,000 miles, leading to more frequent replacements and increased costs.

The commission estimates fuel savings of $179 over four years, but this does not account for the potential need to buy tires twice as often. The proposal may affect tire options for various vehicle models, including those from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda.
