California Orders 11,000 Drivers to Retake Written Test - or Lose Their Licenses

The California DMV has sent shockwaves through the state by demanding that roughly 11,000 licensed drivers retake their written knowledge exam within 30 days. Failure to comply means their driving privileges could be revoked. The agency says the move stems from what it calls “irregularities” in the testing process, but it has not explained exactly what went wrong.

For drivers who thought they had already passed the test, the letters feel like a gut punch. Sacramento resident David Specht told CBS Sacramento he was blindsided. “I know I didn’t cheat,” he said, adding that DMV staff couldn’t tell him what the problem was, only that many others got the same notice.

The DMV insists the action is about protecting the integrity of California’s licensing system. “Knowledge tests play a critical role in confirming that drivers understand the rules of the road,” the agency said. But without details on whether the issues involve cheating, a software glitch, or an administrative error, affected drivers are left guessing.

We’re following up with those who say they’re caught in the irregularity pool and will report any new information.
