California Driver Seeks Thrifty Replacement After Sequoia Theft

California Driver Seeks Thrifty Replacement After Sequoia Theft

A California man is car shopping after his 2016 Toyota Sequoia Platinum 4x4 was stolen. Jeff, who lives in Ladera Ranch, liked the truck but not its 13 mpg fuel economy, especially with high California gas prices. He needs room for camping gear, his growing son, and his 6'5" frame, plus AWD or 4x4 for ski trips.

His budget is up to $40,000, and he drives mostly short school runs with monthly weekend camping trips.

Three experts offered advice for Jalopnik's "What Car Should You Buy?" column. Tom McParland suggested a new Hyundai Santa Fe SEL AWD, noting the hybrid version gets up to 35 mpg, nearly triple the Sequoia's mileage, and handles light trails while offering boxy space for gear or even sleeping.

Andy Kalmowitz recommended a 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid from Scottsdale with 70,000 miles for $33,800. He cited its 455 horsepower, 516 pound-feet of torque, Porsche AWD, and EPA-estimated 46 MPGe combined with 13 miles of electric range. He acknowledged the mileage is higher but called the Cayenne stout and left over $6,000 for potential maintenance.

Amber DaSilva picked the Subaru Outback, saying Jeff is the target market for half the automotive industry. She noted the Outback is a reasonable size in person, fits a family and gear without being a gas guzzler, and pointed to a Glendale example under budget while advising Jeff to choose any trim or options he likes among the many Outbacks available for under $40,000.
