California DMV Orders 11,000 Drivers to Retake Written Test or Lose License

California DMV Orders 11,000 Drivers to Retake Written Test or Lose License

If you’ve ever yelled at another driver, or been yelled at, you know the California DMV isn’t usually the one dishing out the insults. But now, the agency has sent out roughly 11,000 letters telling recipients they need to retake the written knowledge test within 30 days, or risk having their license revoked.

” A spokesperson stressed that getting a letter doesn’t mean you’re being accused of cheating, but you still have to take the test again.

For most Californians, a trip to the DMV is already a chore, think long lines, paperwork, and the kind of wait that inspired the sloth scene in Zootopia. Now imagine being told you have to retake a test you already passed, or lose the ability to drive. That’s the reality for thousands of drivers who received these letters.

Many assumed it was a glitch or clerical error, but the DMV says the letters are legitimate. The agency’s monitoring system detected patterns suggesting some test-takers may have used phones or other devices to look up answers, a growing temptation in an era when every driver carries a pocket-sized internet connection.

The situation has already caused real headaches. Some drivers who retook the test and failed, despite having passed it before, are now facing license suspension. Two state senators have written to the DMV demanding answers about how the letters were triggered and why the process isn’t more transparent.

On one hand, no one wants cheaters cutting corners on roads where safety matters. On the other hand, how many of us could ace a written driving test tomorrow without a quick refresher? Maybe it’s worth cracking open the handbook, DMV letter or not.
