BMW’s New X5 Comes in Five Flavors - Here’s Why Only Two Are Coming to the U.S.

BMW’s latest X5 generation, the G65, shares one body but offers five different powertrains, each tailored to specific markets. In a new video interview, X5 Product Manager Nina McFadden walked us through every variant, side by side, revealing what sets them apart beyond the spec sheet.
For American buyers, the story is simple: only the X5 40 and the fully electric iX5 60 are confirmed for launch here. The M60e plug-in hybrid, the 40d diesel, and the hydrogen model stay overseas — at least for now.
5 seconds. It’s the heaviest X5 at nearly 5,000 pounds, and it’s the only variant to get unique M Performance styling: a thick horizontal light signature, quad exhaust tips, and red brake calipers. But it won’t cross the Atlantic. The iX5 60, by contrast, runs two electric motors producing 578 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque.
S. range. Fast charging at 460 kW can add 170 miles in 10 minutes. McFadden noted that the iX5’s appearance depends on the M Sport package chosen — not the drivetrain — so buyers get the same design options as the gas-powered 40.
The base X5 40, powered by a mild-hybrid B58 engine with about 400 horsepower, is the lightest of the lineup and the only one with a non-M-Sport look: a plainer grille, gray calipers, and matte black cladding. It also comes with standard soft-close doors but no automatic doors. , nor is the hydrogen X5, which is still two years out.
That hydrogen model, arriving in 2028, will feature a new Gen 3 fuel cell that’s 25 percent smaller than before and a 750 km WLTP range. For now, American shoppers will choose between the 40 and the iX5 60 — with the X5 50e plug-in hybrid also available but not covered in this interview.
