BMW's Leasing Boom Makes the F30 320i a Surprisingly Affordable Used Pick

The BMW 3 Series has long been a favorite among compact executive sedans, and the F30-generation 320i is now turning heads for a different reason: its used-market price has dropped dramatically. Sold in the US from 2013 to 2018, this entry-level model is now one of the most affordable BMWs from the late 2010s, largely because of the brand's heavy reliance on leasing.
BMW reportedly handles 60 to 65 percent of its business through leases, and the 320i allegedly leased at even higher rates. When those leases ended, many cars were returned to BMW and sold on the open market, creating a steady supply that pushed prices down. As a result, the F30 320i can now be found for around $12,000, with Kelley Blue Book valuing a 2018 base model at just $13,300.
Despite the low price, the 320i remains a proper BMW. It comes standard with rear-wheel drive and offers xDrive all-wheel drive as an option. Its near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution and longitudinally mounted engine give it balanced handling. 0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 181 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic (a rare six-speed manual was also offered).
Fuel economy is rated at 28 mpg combined for rear-drive models. In 2015, BMW swapped the N20 engine for the B48B20, which offered the same output but with a closed-deck block design.
Maintenance costs also played a role in the price drop. RepairPal estimates annual upkeep at about $911, with a range of $820 to $1,002. The early N20 engine is known for timing chain guide issues, which can cause a whine or rattle and, if ignored, lead to severe engine damage. BMW fixed the guides in early 2015, and the issue was fully resolved with the B48B20 later that year.
Buyers should avoid early N20 models unless the chain guides have been replaced.
7 percent drop over ten years. That means well-maintained examples are now very affordable, though buyers should check service records carefully. For those who prefer a new car, BMW's current lease deals include the 2026 330i RWD at $479 per month for 39 months with $4,959 due at signing, or the xDrive version at $499 per month with $4,999 due at signing.
The 2026 M340i, with its 386-horsepower inline-six, leases for $619 per month with $5,419 due at signing.
