BMW’s First All-Electric M Car: What You Need to Know About the 2028 iM3

BMW’s First All-Electric M Car: What You Need to Know About the 2028 iM3

BMW is making its biggest push yet into the electric performance market with the upcoming 2028 iM3. This is the first M car designed from the ground up as an EV, not a conversion. It shares some styling cues with the new i3 but gets wider fenders, aggressive aero touches, and sharper lighting that signal its M pedigree.

A gas-powered M3 will still be available, arriving in showrooms before the electric version.

Under the skin, the iM3 rides on BMW’s new Neue Klasse platform with an 800-volt system and batteries that pack 20 percent more energy density than previous EVs. The car uses four electric motors—likely producing well over 600 horsepower in base form and possibly topping 1,000 in a future CS trim.

BMW’s “Heart of Joy” control unit manages everything from acceleration to braking and steering. Production is expected to start in 2027.

9-inch trapezoidal touchscreen and a new Panoramic Vision system that projects key info across the windshield from A-pillar to A-pillar. You can drag and drop widgets from the main screen to the windshield display, and even use your smartphone or smartwatch as a key. Expect a digital dash, customizable ambient lighting, and both front and rear trunks for storage.

If you’re thinking about a BMW sports sedan sooner, the current i4 remains a strong choice—especially the 592-hp dual-motor version.
