BMW Widens Canada Recall Over Starter Fire Hazard

BMW Widens Canada Recall Over Starter Fire Hazard

BMW has expanded a recall in Canada, this time targeting a dangerous overheating issue with engine starters that could lead to vehicle fires. The problem spans multiple models from the 2021 through 2026 model years, and the automaker is urging owners to take action. It’s not a minor glitch, the defect can cause the starter motor to overheat even when the car is off, creating a serious safety risk.

The recall covers a broad range of BMWs, including sedans, SUVs, and hybrids. Specific models affected include the 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, and several others. In some cases, the starter may continue to operate after the engine shuts down, generating enough heat to melt nearby components or ignite a fire.

BMW has confirmed that there have been no reported injuries or crashes in Canada related to this issue, but the company is taking no chances.

Owners will receive notifications by mail, and the fix is straightforward: dealerships will inspect the starter and, if needed, replace it free of charge. In the meantime. BMW recommends parking these vehicles outside and away from structures until the repair is done. If you drive one of these models and haven’t heard from BMW yet, check your vehicle identification number (VIN) on the Transport Canada recall website.

At Boca Auto Care, we always advise staying on top of recalls, this one’s too hot to ignore.
