BMW Warns 29,000 Hybrids at Risk of Fire, but Owners Face a Month-Long Wait for Answers

BMW has issued a recall affecting nearly 29,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles over a serious fire risk, but many owners won’t know if their car is part of the problem until next month. The automaker says a manufacturing defect in the high-voltage battery pack could cause internal short circuits, leading to overheating and, in some cases, fires, even when the car is parked and turned off.

The recall covers certain 2020-2024 models, including the 330e, 530e, X3 xDrive30e, and the i8 sports car. BMW says it’s working on a fix, but replacement parts won’t be available until at least October. In the meantime, the company is advising owners to park outdoors and away from structures, and to avoid charging the battery until repairs are completed.

That’s a tough ask for anyone relying on their hybrid for daily commuting.

For drivers in South Florida, where heat and humidity can accelerate battery issues, this recall hits close to home. At Boca Auto Care, we’re urging local BMW owners to check their vehicle identification number against the recall list as soon as possible. If you’re unsure or need help interpreting BMW’s notice, bring your hybrid in and we’ll inspect the battery system and advise on safe parking and charging practices until the official fix arrives.
