BMW Urges Owners of Certain Plug-In Hybrids to Move Them Outdoors Immediately

BMW Urges Owners of Certain Plug-In Hybrids to Move Them Outdoors Immediately

BMW has issued a safety advisory for owners of several plug-in hybrid models, warning that the vehicles should be parked outside and not charged until further notice. The recall affects certain 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, and X5 plug-in hybrids produced between 2020 and 2023, due to a potential battery issue that could lead to overheating.

The German automaker says the problem stems from a manufacturing defect in the high-voltage battery cells, which may cause internal short circuits even when the car is turned off.

The company is urging drivers to stop charging their vehicles and park them away from structures or other cars until repairs are completed. BMW has not confirmed any fires or injuries related to the defect, but the precautionary measure is meant to reduce risk. Owners will be notified by mail and can schedule a free inspection and replacement of the battery pack at authorized dealerships.

The fix is expected to take several hours, and loaner vehicles will be provided if needed.

This recall adds to a growing list of battery-related issues across the auto industry, as manufacturers race to improve hybrid and EV safety. BMW advises affected owners to check their vehicle identification number on the company’s recall website to see if their car is included.

Until then, the safest move is to keep the hybrid parked outside and avoid plugging it in. For more details, contact your local dealer or the BMW customer service hotline.
