BMW Tells 29,000 Owners to Park Outside Amid New Recall

, warning owners that a potential defect could pose a fire risk even when the engine is off. The automaker is advising drivers to park their cars outside, away from structures and other vehicles, until repairs are completed. The recall covers select 2022 through 2024 models, including certain 3 Series, X3, X5, and X7 vehicles, among others.
The issue stems from a short circuit possible in the vehicle's electrical system, specifically within the starter motor. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem can occur when the engine isn't running, and has been linked to at least one reported fire.
Dealers will replace the starter motor at no cost, and BMW says it is not aware of any injuries related to the defect.
Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by visiting BMW's recall website or using the NHTSA's VIN lookup tool. In the meantime, the safest bet is to keep the car parked outside and away from anything flammable.
