BMW Tells 29,000 Owners: Park It Outside Until We Fix This

BMW has issued a recall affecting roughly 29,000 vehicles across the U.S., and the warning is unusual: park the car outside, away from any structures. The issue stems from a potential coolant pump failure that could lead to an under-hood fire, even when the engine is off.

The recall covers select 2024 and 2025 model year vehicles, including the X1, X2, and certain 3 Series sedans. According to documents filed with federal safety regulators, the electric coolant pump may short-circuit, causing it to overheat. BMW has received 18 reports of thermal events related to the defect, though no injuries have been reported so far.

Dealers will replace the coolant pump and, in some cases, install an updated wiring harness at no cost to owners. Until the repair is completed, BMW strongly recommends parking the vehicle outside and not inside a garage or near flammable materials. Owners can expect notification letters starting late March.
