BMW Tells 29,000 Hybrid Owners: Park Outside Due to Fire Danger

BMW Tells 29,000 Hybrid Owners: Park Outside Due to Fire Danger

, warning owners to park away from garages and structures because of a potential fire risk. The problem stems from a battery defect that can cause overheating, even when the car is turned off and not charging. The recall covers several 2020 through 2024 models, including the 330e, 530e, X3 xDrive30e, and others.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the issue involves a battery cell that may short-circuit internally, leading to thermal runaway, a chain reaction that can ignite a fire. BMW has not reported any crashes or injuries tied to the defect so far, but the company is taking no chances.

Owners are being told to park outside and away from other vehicles until a fix is available.

Dealers will replace the high-voltage battery pack at no cost, with repair notifications expected to go out later this month. In the meantime. BMW advises drivers to limit charging and to keep the battery charge below 50 percent if possible. If you own one of the affected models, check your vehicle identification number (VIN) on BMW’s recall site or NHTSA’s database.

And, as always, Boca Auto Care recommends staying on top of recall notices to keep your ride safe.
