BMW Recalls Plug-In Hybrid 3, 5, and 7 Series Over Battery Fire Concerns

BMW Recalls Plug-In Hybrid 3, 5, and 7 Series Over Battery Fire Concerns

BMW has issued a recall for certain plug-in hybrid versions of its 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series sedans, citing a potential fire risk tied to the high-voltage battery. The move affects thousands of vehicles globally, with owners being urged to park outdoors and away from structures until repairs are completed.

The recall stems from a manufacturing defect that could allow battery cells to short-circuit, even when the car is turned off.

According to BMW, the issue is isolated to specific production batches and involves a contamination during cell assembly. If a short occurs, it could lead to thermal runaway, a chain reaction that causes the battery to overheat and ignite. No injuries or crashes have been reported yet, but the company is taking no chances.

Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the battery pack free of charge, with repair times estimated at under two hours.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters starting next month. In the meantime. BMW recommends limiting charging to 50 percent battery capacity and not leaving the car plugged in unattended. The recall is a rare but serious hiccup for BMW’s electrification push, which has otherwise seen strong sales for its plug-in lineup.

For local drivers, Boca Auto Care is ready to assist with pre-recall inspections and can help coordinate with BMW dealerships for the fix.
