BMW Recalls Over 744,000 Vehicles for Starter Motor Fire Risk - Third Such Action in Recent Years

BMW is back in the headlines with yet another large-scale recall, this time involving faulty starter motors that could spark a fire. The German automaker has now issued three separate recalls for similar starter-related issues in a short period, and the latest campaign affects more than 744,000 vehicles globally, including 42,300 in Germany.

The recall was flagged by Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) and covers cars built between July 31, 2020 and February 26, 2026.

The problem this time stems from manufacturing inconsistencies during starter production, which can leave deposits inside the RWT starter relay. Those deposits may increase electrical resistance, and in rare cases, that resistance can cause a short circuit, and potentially a fire.

Unlike some earlier recalls tied to water intrusion, this defect only poses a risk the moment the starter is engaged. A parked car that isn’t being started is safe. The fix is straightforward: dealers will replace the starter motor at no cost to owners.

The recall covers a wide swath of BMW’s lineup, including the 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and Z4 Roadster. Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by calling BMW at +49 89 1250 16175 with their VIN handy. Written notifications from the KBA or BMW are expected in the coming weeks.

The KBA has classified the action as a product safety issue, meaning regulators will keep an eye on the remedy process.
