BMW Recalls Over 318,000 Vehicles in U.S. Over Fire Risk

BMW of North America is recalling more than 318,000 vehicles across the United States due to a potential fire hazard linked to the engine starter. The recall, announced Tuesday, affects a wide range of models including the Toyota Supra. BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, Z4, and X3, spanning model years from 2021 through 2026.

According to a release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue stems from a component inside the starter motor that can wear out over time. If that happens, the starter can overheat and possibly catch fire. No injuries or crashes have been reported yet, but BMW is taking no chances.

Dealers will replace the starter motor free of charge for all affected owners.

Notification letters are scheduled to go out on August 28, 2026, giving owners plenty of time to schedule repairs. In the meantime. BMW recommends that anyone with questions contact their local dealer or check the NHTSA recall website. The recall is a reminder that even premium automakers aren't immune to mechanical flaws, and that staying on top of recalls is key to keeping your car safe.
