BMW Recalls Nearly 30,000 Vehicles in U.S. Over Fire Risk

BMW is recalling 29,119 vehicles in the United States due to a problem with the engine starter that could lead to overheating, short circuits, and an increased risk of fire. The recall, reported by Reuters and confirmed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, covers several models including the 530e xDrive, 740Le xDrive, and the BMW iPerformance lineup.

The issue stems from a faulty starter component that may fail under certain conditions, potentially causing electrical damage and fire hazards. BMW has not yet provided a timeline for repairs, but owners can expect notifications and free replacements at authorized dealerships. The recall adds to a challenging period for the German automaker.

In late June, BMW shares hit a five-year low after the company slashed its 2026 profit forecast, citing weakening demand in China and disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran. 3 billion euros, squeezed by fierce competition in the Chinese market and new tariff pressures.

The recall is a separate but unwelcome distraction as BMW navigates these headwinds.
