BMW Recalls Nearly 30,000 Plug-In Hybrids Over Fire Risk Linked to Starter Relay Issue

BMW Recalls Nearly 30,000 Plug-In Hybrids Over Fire Risk Linked to Starter Relay Issue

BMW is recalling 29,119 plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States due to a defect in the starter relay that could cause a fire even when the car is turned off. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the problem stems from the engine starter motor's electrical contacts, which can overheat and melt, potentially igniting nearby components.

The recall affects certain 2020-2024 model year 330e, 530e, 745e, X3 xDrive30e, and X5 xDrive45e vehicles, among others.

According to documents filed with NHTSA, the issue occurs when the starter relay remains engaged after the engine has started, allowing continuous current flow. This can lead to thermal damage around the starter motor, and in rare cases, the heat may spread to the engine compartment wiring or even the engine itself.

, but the company is aware of a handful of thermal incidents globally.

BMW will notify owners starting next month and will replace the starter motor and relay free of charge. The automaker is also developing a software update that will prevent the relay from staying on after the engine is running. Owners can check if their vehicle is included by visiting NHTSA’s recall site or calling BMW customer service.

The fix is expected to take about two hours at any authorized BMW dealership.
