BMW Recalls Nearly 11,000 Vehicles Over Starter Motor Issue

BMW Recalls Nearly 11,000 Vehicles Over Starter Motor Issue

BMW has issued a recall affecting close to 11,000 vehicles in South Africa after a defect was discovered in the starter motor. The problem, which stems from a supplier manufacturing error, can cause the starter to overheat and potentially lead to an engine compartment fire. The recall covers several popular models, including the 3 Series, 5 Series, and X3, built between 2019 and 2021.

According to the National Consumer Commission, the affected vehicles may experience a burning smell or smoke from the engine bay. In some cases, the starter motor can fail completely, leaving drivers stranded. BMW says the issue is not linked to any reported accidents or injuries locally, but it is taking proactive steps to fix the problem before any incidents occur.

Owners of the impacted vehicles will be contacted directly by BMW South Africa and asked to bring their cars to an authorized dealership for a free inspection and replacement of the starter motor. The repair takes roughly two hours, and BMW will also cover any towing costs if the vehicle cannot be driven safely.

For now, the company advises owners to park their cars outdoors and away from structures until the fix is applied.

If you own a BMW and are unsure whether your vehicle is affected, you can check your VIN on the BMW South Africa website or call their customer service line. The recall is a reminder that even premium automakers occasionally face manufacturing hiccups, but swift action can keep drivers safe.
