BMW recalls nearly 11,000 vehicles over potential engine fire risk

S. due to a potential engine fire hazard. The recall affects certain 2023 and 2024 models, including the X1, X2, and 2 Series, after the automaker discovered that a faulty electrical connection in the engine compartment could overheat and lead to a fire, even when the car is turned off.
No injuries have been reported, but the company is urging owners to take the issue seriously.
The problem stems from a component called the positive crankcase ventilation heater. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the heater's electrical connector may not have been properly secured during assembly. Over time, this can cause resistance and heat buildup, potentially melting the connector and igniting surrounding materials.
BMW says the risk is higher if the vehicle has been driven in extreme conditions or if the engine is frequently under heavy load.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail starting in mid-April. The fix is straightforward: dealers will inspect the connector and replace the heater assembly if necessary, at no cost. BMW also recommends that drivers park away from structures or other vehicles until the repair is completed.
For any questions or to check if a specific vehicle is included in the recall, owners should contact their local dealer directly.
