BMW Pulls Nearly 30,000 Plug-In Hybrids Off Roads Due to Fire Risk

BMW Pulls Nearly 30,000 Plug-In Hybrids Off Roads Due to Fire Risk

BMW has issued a recall affecting 29,119 plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States after discovering a potential fire hazard linked to the battery system. The automaker says the issue stems from a manufacturing defect that could cause the high-voltage battery to short-circuit, even when the car is turned off and parked.

No injuries or crashes have been reported so far, but the company is urging owners to take immediate action.

The recall covers several 2020 through 2024 models, including the 330e, 530e, 745e, X3 xDrive30e, and X5 xDrive45e. BMW says the problem is isolated to vehicles equipped with a specific battery pack supplied by a third-party manufacturer. Dealers will inspect the battery and, if necessary, replace it free of charge.

Owners can expect notification letters starting next month, though BMW recommends checking their vehicle identification number online now to see if their car is affected.

In the meantime. BMW advises drivers to park their hybrids outdoors and away from structures until the repair is complete. The company also suggests not charging the vehicle. This recall adds to a growing list of battery-related safety actions across the auto industry, as plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles become more common.
