BMW Pulls 29,000 Plug-In Hybrids From Roads Over Engine Fire Risk

BMW is issuing a recall for roughly 29,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles after discovering a potential fire hazard lurking under the hood. The problem stems from a manufacturing defect in the engine that could, in rare cases, cause oil to leak onto hot exhaust components and ignite. The recall affects certain models from the 2020 through 2024 model years, including the 330e, 530e, X3 xDrive30e, and Mini Cooper SE Countryman All4.

The German automaker says the issue is linked to a faulty crankshaft pulley that may separate from the engine while driving. When that happens, oil can spray onto the exhaust system, creating a fire risk even when the car is parked and turned off. BMW has received a small number of reports of smoke or fire related to the defect, though no injuries have been reported so far.

Owners will be notified by mail starting in late April and can bring their vehicles to any authorized dealer for a free inspection and repair.

In the meantime, BMW advises owners to park their cars outdoors and away from structures until the fix is complete. The recall comes as automakers increasingly juggle the complexities of hybrid and electric powertrains, where new components often introduce unforeseen failure points.

For Boca Auto Care customers, this serves as a reminder to keep an eye on recall notices and bring any concerns to a trusted mechanic for a thorough check.
