BMW Pulls 29,000 Plug-In Hybrids From Roads Due to Battery Fire Hazard

, citing a risk that the battery pack could catch fire even when the car is turned off. The recall affects select 2020 through 2024 models, including the popular 330e sedan and X5 xDrive45e SUV, after reports of thermal events linked to debris contamination inside the high-voltage battery.
The problem stems from foreign particles that may have entered the battery cells during manufacturing. Over time, these contaminants can cause a short circuit, leading to overheating and potential flames. BMW says it has received a handful of field reports but no injuries so far.
Owners are advised to park outdoors and away from structures until repairs are completed.
Dealers will inspect the battery packs and replace them if necessary at no cost to owners. Notifications are expected to go out later this month.
