BMW Pulls 10,000+ Cars Off Roads Over Faulty Starter Motor

BMW Pulls 10,000+ Cars Off Roads Over Faulty Starter Motor

BMW has issued a recall affecting more than 10,000 vehicles after discovering a defect in the starter motor that could pose a safety risk. The German automaker says the component may overheat, potentially leading to a fire under the hood. The recall covers select models from the 2023 and 2024 model years, including certain 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, and X5 variants.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem stems from an electrical issue in the starter that can cause it to fail or short-circuit. BMW says it has received a handful of reports of smoke or melting near the starter, though no injuries or crashes have been linked to the defect so far.

Owners will be notified starting next month and can bring their vehicles to any authorized dealer for a free inspection and replacement of the starter assembly.
