BMW Marks M3’s 40th Anniversary with Limited China-Only Edition

BMW Marks M3’s 40th Anniversary with Limited China-Only Edition

BMW is celebrating four decades of the M3 with a special limited edition for China, available as both a sedan and a wagon. Production is capped at just 20 units for each body style, making 40 cars in total.

The sedan, based on the G80, comes in the retro-inspired Laguna Seca Blue, while the wagon, the G81, features a bold Wildberry paint finish. The wagon also swaps the sedan’s black wheels for a bronze finish, with blue brake calipers on the sedan and red on the wagon. Both models get a fully blacked-out kidney grille and smoked headlights for a more aggressive look.

Inside and out, the cars are covered in “40 Jahre M3” badging, appearing on the center console, front headrests, side sills, and roof. The sedan gets a carbon fiber roof, but the wagon does not, as BMW says reworking the assembly line for that feature would be too costly.

The special edition is sold only in China, where most BMWs are built locally, but these M3s come from Munich, making them significantly more expensive than their global counterparts. The sedan is priced at RMB 1,038,000, and the wagon at RMB 1,068,000, roughly $154,000 and $159,000.

Both come with the M Driver’s Package as standard, unlocking a top speed of 180 mph for the sedan and 174 mph for the wagon, though buyers will only be able to reach those speeds on a track since China has no equivalent to the Autobahn.

The cars debuted today at the 2026 Chengdu International Auto Show, and despite the steep price. BMW expects all 40 units to sell quickly.
