BMW Lets You Build Your Dream Car by Talking to ChatGPT

BMW Lets You Build Your Dream Car by Talking to ChatGPT

For years, the ritual of configuring a new car has meant clicking through endless menus, selecting paint colors and wheel designs one dropdown at a time. BMW just flipped that script. The automaker is now the first to let customers customize a vehicle through a simple conversation with an AI assistant, no browsing required.

The new ChatGPT plugin works on phones and computers, letting buyers chat naturally about their preferences, engine type, interior space, color, wheel size, and more, without ever opening BMW’s traditional configurator. Once the bot understands what you want, it pulls recommendations directly from the automaker’s official system and hands you a link to your personalized build page.

It’s a shortcut that replaces clicks with text prompts, and for some shoppers, that might feel like a refreshing change of pace.

What makes the tool especially useful is its ability to compare different configurations side by side, something the standard website doesn’t do as fluidly. If the AI can’t find what you’re looking for on BMW’s site, it searches the broader web, though that’s a mixed blessing, given AI’s well-known reliability issues.

BMW says it developed the plugin because more people are turning to conversational AI instead of search engines and websites to find information. Still, the company notes that the ChatGPT tool depends entirely on the official configurator, so it’s not going to replace the tried-and-true method anytime soon.
