BMW Japan Drops a Darker, Better-Equipped 4 Series Gran Coupe

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe has been flying under the radar lately, and for good reason. The five-door G26 model has been on the market for nearly five years, and there’s no direct replacement in sight. But before the sleek hatchback fades away, BMW Japan is giving it one last hurrah with a limited-run special edition called the Edition Shadow.
It starts with either the 420i or 420d M Sport package, then adds a long list of extras that make it a compelling buy for anyone who still appreciates a sporty four-door coupe.
The visual changes are subtle but effective. The kidney grille gets a blacked-out treatment, along with dark side mirror caps and exhaust finishers. Customers can order the car in Black Sapphire for a full-on stealth look, or go with the Fire Red seen in photos. Other no-cost paint options include Alpine White, Cape York Green, M Brooklyn Grey, Mineral White, and M Portimao Blue.
For those willing to spend extra, Dravit Grey or Tanzanite Blue Individual paints are available. The 420i rides on 19-inch bi-color Y-spoke wheels, regardless of the color chosen.
Inside, BMW Japan packs in heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, fine brushed-aluminum trim, and galvanized buttons. The seats come in either Black or Moca leather. Adaptive LED headlights and laser taillights are also standard. Pricing starts at ¥8,000,000 (about $49,300) for the 420i, a ¥360,000 ($2,200) premium over the regular M Sport.
The diesel 420d version runs ¥8,500,000 ($52,400), which is ¥300,000 ($1,800) more than its standard counterpart. BMW hasn’t confirmed when the G26 Gran Coupe will be discontinued, but most signs point to a phase-out by 2027. The next-generation 3 Series sedan and i3 sedan are coming soon, along with an i3 Touring and an iX4 electric crossover-coupe that could debut this fall.
