BMW Issues Recall on Nearly 30,000 Plug-In Hybrid Sedans Due to Starter Fire Risk

BMW has announced a recall affecting 29,119 plug-in hybrid sedans in the United States, citing a potential fire hazard linked to the engine starter. The issue involves a malfunction that could cause the starter motor to overheat, increasing the risk of a fire even when the vehicle is turned off.
Owners are urged to park their cars outdoors and away from structures until repairs are completed.
The recall covers specific models from recent production years, including the 330e sedan, 530e sedan, and the 745e xDrive. BMW identified the problem during routine testing, discovering that the starter motor could fail if the engine repeatedly cranks without starting. In rare cases, debris or moisture may cause a short circuit, leading to thermal damage.
No injuries or crashes have been reported so far, but the company is taking proactive measures.
Dealers will inspect and replace the starter motor free of charge, with parts expected to become available later this month. BMW will notify affected owners by mail starting next week. For drivers in the Boca Raton area, Boca Auto Care recommends contacting your local dealership immediately to schedule a repair.
In the meantime, if you own one of these vehicles, park it outside and avoid charging the battery overnight as a precaution.
