BMW Issues Recall for Nearly 30,000 Plug-In Hybrids in U.S. Over Starter Issue

BMW is recalling approximately 29,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States due to a defect in the starter motor that could pose a fire risk. The recall affects several 2020 to 2024 model year vehicles, including the 330e, 530e, X3 xDrive30e, and the 745e xDrive. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the starter may overheat if the engine is repeatedly cranked without starting, potentially melting nearby components.
The automaker says the issue stems from a software problem that can cause the starter to draw excessive current. In rare cases, this can lead to thermal damage or even a fire, even when the vehicle is parked and turned off. S. and Canada. Owners will be notified starting December 20 and are advised to visit a dealer for a free software update.
For now, BMW recommends that owners park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until the fix is applied. The recall is the latest in a series of quality hiccups for the German automaker, which has been working to expand its electrified lineup. If you own one of the affected models, you can check your vehicle identification number (VIN) on BMW's recall website or the NHTSA's database.
