BMW Issues Recall for Nearly 30,000 Cars - Here’s the List

BMW is pulling more than 29,000 vehicles from U.S. roads due to a safety issue that could increase crash risk. The recall, announced this week, covers several popular models from recent model years, and owners are being urged to schedule repairs at no cost.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem involves a software glitch in the braking system. In affected cars, the brake assist feature may not engage properly when the driver suddenly stomps on the pedal, potentially lengthening stopping distances.

That’s a serious concern in emergency situations.

The recall spans 2023 and 2024 model year vehicles, including the BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, and X7, as well as the electric i4 and iX. BMW says it will notify owners by mail starting next month, and dealers will update the software free of charge. If you own one of these models, you can also check your vehicle identification number on BMW’s recall website or call their customer service hotline.

This isn’t the first time BMW has faced a software-related recall, but the company says no injuries or crashes have been reported linked to this specific defect. For now, owners are advised to drive normally but to bring their car in for the update as soon as they receive the notice.
