BMW Issues Recall for 3, 5, and 7 Series Plug-In Hybrids Over Fire Concerns

BMW Issues Recall for 3, 5, and 7 Series Plug-In Hybrids Over Fire Concerns

BMW has announced a recall affecting select plug-in hybrid versions of its 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series models due to a potential fire risk. The issue stems from a manufacturing defect in the high-voltage battery pack, which could allow internal short circuits even when the vehicle is turned off.

Owners are being urged to park outside and away from structures until repairs are completed.

The recall covers certain model years where the battery cells may have been improperly assembled. In rare cases, debris inside the battery can cause a thermal event, leading to smoke or fire. BMW has confirmed that no injuries or crashes have been reported related to this defect, but the company is taking proactive steps to address the problem.

Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the battery packs at no cost to owners.

Affected drivers will receive official notifications starting this month. In the meantime, BMW recommends plugging in the vehicle only when someone is present to monitor it, and to avoid charging overnight or in a garage. Owners can check their vehicle’s recall status by visiting BMW’s website or contacting their local dealer.
