BMW Issues Massive Recall Over Fire Risk Linked to Faulty Starters

BMW of North America has announced a recall covering more than 318,000 vehicles after discovering that a defective starter in certain four-cylinder engines could fail, and in some cases, spark a fire. The automaker disclosed the issue in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, explaining that an internal component inside the starter was wearing out much faster than expected.
That premature wear. BMW says, can cause the starter to overheat and potentially ignite nearby materials under the hood.
The recall affects a broad range of models, including the 228i, 328i, X1, X3, and X4, among others, from the 2019 through 2023 model years. BMW says it launched an investigation after receiving reports of smoke and melting near the starter in a handful of cases. While no injuries or crashes have been linked to the defect so far, the company is urging owners to schedule repairs immediately.
Dealers will replace the starter motor at no cost, and owners can expect notification letters starting in December.
