BMW i3 Named 2026 Car of the Year Before U.S. Arrival

The new BMW i3 hasn't hit American showrooms yet, but it's already taking home trophies. CAR Magazine has awarded the electric sports sedan its overall 2026 Car of the Year title, marking the first major industry win for the second Neue Klasse model. The honor comes ahead of the i3's planned U.S. launch in 2027.
The award was part of CAR's inaugural Genius Awards, which the publication says celebrate innovation and original thinking. The closely related iX3 also won the magazine's Electric Vehicle of the Year award. CAR editor Ben Miller noted the challenge: the combustion-powered 3 Series has stood for practicality and driving enjoyment for over five decades, and the i3 had to match that while competing in a crowded electric-sedan segment.
The judges concluded BMW succeeded.
Production of the i3 began in Munich in August, with a UK launch scheduled later this year. S. availability is set for 2027, though pricing and EPA certification are still pending. The initial i3 50 xDrive model features two electric motors with an estimated 463 horsepower. BMW projects up to 440 miles of EPA range, though that's preliminary; European WLTP estimates reach as high as 563 miles.
The 800-volt architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW, which BMW says can add roughly 248 miles of WLTP range in 10 minutes under ideal conditions. Bidirectional charging is also included.
The car uses BMW's Heart of Joy computer to integrate powertrain, braking, and energy regeneration, while Panoramic Vision projects information onto the lower windshield. The dedicated electric platform allows a traditional three-box sedan design rather than a crossover or compromised conversion.
The iX3 has already won several honors, including 2026 World Car of the Year, and the i3 appears to continue that momentum. Awards don't guarantee sales, and the i3 faces stiff competition from Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Chinese EV makers overseas. Still, winning Car of the Year before most customers have even seen the car is a strong start.
