BMW Expands Recall as Defective Starters Pose Fire Risk

BMW Expands Recall as Defective Starters Pose Fire Risk

S. due to a faulty starter motor that can overheat and catch fire. The latest action follows a previous recall covering nearly 800,000 cars and SUVs for the same issue. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem stems from a starter that can fail mechanically, leading to electrical overheating.

The recall affects several 2020 and 2021 model year vehicles, including the 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, and X7, among others. BMW says that in rare cases, the starter can lock up and generate excessive heat, which may melt nearby components and ignite a fire. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until repairs are complete.

No injuries or crashes have been reported in connection with this batch, the automaker noted.

Dealers will replace the starter motor free of charge. BMW plans to notify affected owners by mail starting in late April. Vehicle owners can also check their car's status using BMW's recall lookup tool or by contacting customer service. As with any safety recall, prompt attention is recommended to eliminate the risk.
