BMW and Toyota Supra Owners Face Fire Hazard Recall

BMW and Toyota Supra Owners Face Fire Hazard Recall

Over 318,000 BMWs and Toyota Supras are being pulled back to dealerships due to a potential fire risk, according to a new safety notice. The recall stems from a wiring issue that could cause an electrical short, leading to overheating and possible flames while the vehicle is parked or being driven.

The affected models span several years, including popular sedans and sports cars.

BMW first flagged the problem after receiving reports of engine bay smoke and, in a handful of cases, actual fires. The culprit appears to be the positive battery cable connection at the junction box, which can degrade over time. Toyota is joining the recall because the Supra shares its mechanical underpinnings with the BMW Z4.

Owners should expect to hear from both automakers starting next month.

The fix is straightforward: dealers will inspect the cable connection and, if needed, replace the entire junction box assembly at no charge. BMW advises drivers to park outside and away from structures until the repair is done. For now, no injuries have been reported, but the companies are urging immediate action.

If you own one of these vehicles, check your VIN on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website or contact your local dealer.
