Behind the Wheel: What to Expect When Test Driving from a Dealer vs. a Private Seller

When I worked in car sales, test drives were either the best part of the job or a complete waste of a Saturday. You could tell within five minutes who was serious and who was just killing time. Buyers who came prepared always had the smoothest experience. But not every test drive happens on a dealer lot.

According to decade-old FTC data, about a third of used-car sales come from private sellers. While the mechanics of driving are the same, everything before and after the ride is a different game entirely. Private-seller test drives can be unpredictable, some owners treat their sedans like museum pieces, while others barely want to deal with you.

Safety and scams are real concerns, too.

Dealerships, on the other hand, exist to move metal. If you walk in breathing, expect encouragement to buy. ' Scheduling is easy, walk in most days or book an appointment. Expect to hand over your driver's license; they'll copy it for security. Reputable dealers won't run your credit, but some may use your info to tailor offers.

You're trading personal details for a chance to drive. Salespeople usually ride along, especially on pricier cars, and you'll likely follow a preset route. The upside? Multiple cars to compare, a salesperson to explain features, and sometimes even overnight test drives.

Private sellers are a different animal. Everything is looser, but that means more work for you. Scheduling can be a headache, Facebook Marketplace sellers often ghost. Safety is paramount: meet in a busy public spot, like a police station lot with cameras, and bring a friend. Smart sellers will check your license and insurance.

You'll probably have the owner ride along, but you may get more route flexibility. The owner can explain quirks and maintenance history, which many dealers can't provide. After the drive, you might face pressure to buy, or the seller might wait for a better offer. And you're on your own for paperwork and financing, dealers typically handle that for you.

Knowing these differences can help you get the most out of every test drive.
