Backup Camera Recalls Hit 21 Million, But The Real Problem Is Elsewhere

Backup Camera Recalls Hit 21 Million, But The Real Problem Is Elsewhere

Backup cameras were meant to make reversing safer and easier, but a new analysis shows they've also made cars less reliable. Since the federal mandate took effect eight years ago, automakers have recalled about 21 million vehicles for backup-camera issues, according to a Bloomberg review of NHTSA data.

Including other covered vehicles like RVs and small buses, that number reportedly climbs to nearly 28 million.

Last year alone accounted for roughly 6 million recalled vehicles. Drivers have filed about 2,000 complaints with NHTSA about camera glitches, ranging from blank screens to displays showing outdated images instead of what's actually behind the car, a dangerous situation when you're already in reverse.

The camera itself is rarely the true culprit. The problem often lies in the complex chain of wiring, processors, software, and the infotainment display that must work together to deliver the video feed. Each additional link creates another chance for failure. JD Power's data shows backup cameras have ranked among the 10 most problematic vehicle features every year since 2022, and infotainment was the only category that got worse in its latest 2026 Initial Quality Study.

Recent recalls highlight the trend. In March. Ford recalled 1.7 million vehicles across two campaigns, one for reversed rear-camera images and another for an overheating component that could blank the display. In May. Honda recalled nearly 60,000 EVs whose cameras could let in water or debris.

Despite these issues, backup cameras remain valuable, they can spot children, bicycles, and low obstacles that mirrors miss. But as automakers design cars without rear windows, like the Polestar 4 and upcoming Jaguar Type 01, relying entirely on camera technology, it's essential that these systems work flawlessly for years.
