NHTSA Proposes Changes to Autonomous Vehicle Safety Standards

NHTSA Proposes Changes to Autonomous Vehicle Safety Standards

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced proposed changes to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) that could impact the design of autonomous vehicles. If approved, these changes would allow cars designed exclusively for autonomous driving to be manufactured without a physical brake pedal.

The new regulations would still require autonomous vehicles to meet the same safety standards as traditional cars, including stopping distance requirements. This means that vehicles from various manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda, would be subject to the same safety expectations.

The NHTSA's proposal also opens the door to rethinking other features typically found in cars, such as rearview mirrors and windshield wipers. The proposed changes are intended to accommodate the unique design needs of autonomous vehicles while maintaining safety standards.
