Audi’s Surprise Nuvolari Supercar Hits the Nürburgring for Testing

Audi’s Surprise Nuvolari Supercar Hits the Nürburgring for Testing

Just days after its surprise unveiling, the Audi Nuvolari supercar prototype has been spotted lapping the Nürburgring. While the shape might remind you of the old R8, Audi insists this is something far more ambitious: a twin-turbocharged V8 hybrid packing around 1,000 horsepower.

So how did Audi conjure up such a machine so quickly? The answer lies in its parts bin. Like the R8 before it, the Nuvolari shares its core architecture with a Lamborghini—in this case, the new Temerario. The powertrain, including electric motors, comes from the same source, though Audi tunes it for even more output.

Audi claims the Nuvolari will hit 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and top out at 217 mph. The hybrid system allows for electric-only driving, though Audi hasn’t quoted a range yet. For reference, the related Lamborghini manages only about five miles on battery power alone.

The test mule wears heavy camouflage, but the silhouette is unmistakable. A deployable rear wing cycles through three modes: Closed, Low Downforce, and High Downforce. In its most aggressive setting, the wing generates 882 pounds of downforce.

Audi is also focused on keeping weight down. The hybrid setup adds heft, but a carbon-fiber body shell helps offset it. That labor-intensive construction is one reason production will be limited to just 499 units.

For owners of high-performance hybrids like the Nuvolari, proper maintenance is critical. The axial-flux motors and battery pack require specialized diagnostics to ensure cooling and power delivery remain optimal. Brake fluid should be flushed annually, as repeated high-speed stops can degrade it faster than in standard cars.

And because the hybrid system generates significant heat, engine oil with a high thermal tolerance—such as a full synthetic 5W-40—is recommended. Regular inspections of the carbon body for micro-cracks are also wise, as even minor damage can compromise structural integrity.
