Audi Scraps One-Car-for-All Plan as Global Markets Pull in Different Directions

Audi is abandoning its long-held strategy of building a single vehicle for the entire world, acknowledging that customers in China, Europe, and North America now want fundamentally different things from their cars. The German automaker had been developing a global vehicle concept meant to offer a uniform product across every region, but that one-size-fits-all approach has proven unworkable.

Instead, Audi will now tailor its models for local markets—a shift that also impacts Australia, where vehicles will be designed alongside those for Europe and North America.

The company’s joint-venture brand with SAIC, called AUDI, will focus exclusively on Chinese buyers. Speaking at the preview of the next-generation Q7, Audi’s chief technical officer Rouven Mohr explained: “The idea of the global car—one car that fits the world—this is gone. It’s not fitting anymore in the US or China.

” According to Mohr, Chinese customers prefer tech-heavy cabins with multiple screens and high automation levels, while European buyers want restrained technology, fewer screens, and premium materials. Still, he noted a niche in China that still craves understated Euro-style luxury.

To accelerate development, Audi is adopting what CEO Gernot Döllner calls “China Speed” in Europe. The company has grouped engineering and design teams into “project houses” with direct board approval, cutting decision times drastically. Mohr said this method is already paying off on the limited-edition Nuvolari supercar, the upcoming A4 E-Tron set for 2028, and the production version of the Concept C sports car.

“The speed of development, especially decision-making speed, is much, much, much accelerated,” he said.
