Audi Revives a 2000s Icon as Its Most Affordable EV Yet

Audi is bringing back a fan favorite from the early 2000s, but this time it runs on batteries. The Audi A2 e-tron, spotted recently with minimal camouflage, is set to launch this fall as the brand’s most wallet-friendly electric vehicle. Early prototypes gave us hints, but these latest spy shots reveal a production-ready hatchback that stays surprisingly true to the original MPV’s spirit, updated for a new generation.

The new A2 e-tron looks like a modern, sportback-style evolution of the classic A2, which rolled off assembly lines from 1999 to 2005. 3 Neo, sharing its MEB+ platform and likely its powertrain options. Up front, expect split lighting units and a fully enclosed grille, while the profile features a sloping roofline ending in a pronounced spoiler.

Designers added gloss black cladding, aerodynamic wheels, and winglet-style door pulls reminiscent of the BMW X5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. Out back, a stylized liftgate and angular taillights complete the look.

8-inch infotainment screen. A flat-bottom steering wheel houses the shifter and vehicle controls on a fixed bar. 3 Neo offers battery packs from 50 to 79 kWh, delivering a WLTP range up to 391 miles and motors from 168 to 228 horsepower. The A2 e-tron will likely stick with the higher-end options, though all-wheel drive appears off the table for now.

It’s a clever return to form for a cult classic, now ready for the electric age.
