American EV Reviewer Names His Top Chinese Electric Cars

, it’s easy to feel envious. Adding to that, recent geopolitical moves have raised concerns about gas prices. Even American auto executives like Rivian’s RJ Scaringe and Ford’s Jim Farley admit Chinese EVs have an edge. But which ones are actually worth buying?

S. currently bans Chinese EV sales, including Polestar, and has even threatened Mercedes-Benz over ties. That leaves few American journalists with real experience driving them. Kevin Williams of InsideEVs is an exception, he’s traveled to China and driven over two dozen Chinese EVs in the past two years.

InsideEVs recently published his list of six favorites.

Among them is the Zeekr Mix, an electric minivan that Williams says beats the Volkswagen ID. Buzz in every way. It features three sliding doors, a pillarless design, swiveling seats, and a motorized center console with an optional table. He describes the cabin as better than what Audi or BMW offer, calling it a rolling high-end living room.

The list also includes the BYD Seagull, a small, cheap EV that was once China’s best-selling car. Priced around $8,000, $10,000 in China, it offers heat, A/C, a responsive infotainment system, and room for four adults. Williams says it never felt cheap or poorly made, and he could see paying $20,000 for it in the U.S.

While the full list isn’t ranked, Williams notes these are cars he’d personally own if possible. For the rest of his picks, readers are directed to the original InsideEVs article, since that team did the actual driving and deserves the credit.
